Our staff work very hard to ensure that they are physically and mentally active. All of our elephants take part in individualized enrichment plans that keep each animal physically and mentally fit. These plans focus on stimulating natural behaviors, minimizing atypical behaviors, and providing activities that are both engaging and beneficial. The exhibit also features timed feeders that provide food to the animals at random times during the day and night.
This encourages the elephants to forage as they would in the wild. There are also two deep pools, a waterfall, and a variety of enrichment items such as boomer balls, fire hoses, and street sweeper brushes that provide stimulation and variety.
It allows all the elephants to move between the various yards throughout the day, maximizing their opportunities for enrichment and exercise. When Billy arrived at the L. Zoo as a four-year-old, he exhibited the repetitive behavior of head bobbing. Similar to when people tap their toes or fidget, Billy will bob his head when he expects food or is waiting for a specific activity.
This requires active, ongoing research into the natural history of the animals as well as observational research into what works and does not work in animal husbandry. Historically, zoos believed that male bull elephants needed to be housed in a solitary environment due to their sometimes unpredictable behavior. The perception was that it was safer to manage male elephants apart from female elephants.
However, in the wild, male elephants have social interactions that vary throughout their lifetime. In an effort to give elephants the chance to express more natural behaviors, zoos across the world have shifted their management practices to give male and female elephants time together. These new interactions will give Billy, Tina, Jewel, and Shaunzi the opportunity to grow socially, form bonds with one another, and allow for a fuller and richer life experience.
